Two summer sessions of The Boulder Campus Smoking Cessation Program, the only tobacco cessation program in Boulder County, will be offered at the University of Colorado at Boulder beginning June 6 and June 10.

"The classes we offer have a higher success rate than most other tobacco cessation programs," said Margaret Resch, director of the Employee Wellness Program at CU-Boulder.Ìý

The Wellness Program and Wardenburg Health Center sponsor the program. A participant at a recent CU-Boulder cessation program described it as "informative with an atmosphere that promotes comfort for all levels of quitting."

According to the Tobacco Summit of April 2001, tobacco use among college students throughout the country is at a high level. More than 20 percent of tobacco users in college started after enrolling in college, and a large number of students who started using tobacco before college reinitiated or increased their tobacco use in college.

The program, which was developed in January 2000, provides various options in order to help meet the needs of its diverse participants. In addition to the sessions, the program also offers a 24-hour "Quit Line" and one-on-one tobacco cessation counseling. The one-on-one counseling has had a more than 50 percent success rate.

The CU-Boulder smoking cessation program will be offering an "Am I Ready to Quit?" seminar June 4 from noon to 1 p.m. in room 321 of the Wardenburg Student Health Center.Ìý

The first program starts June 6 and runs through July 11, meeting four times. The second session begins June 10 and runs through July 15. Both the programs and the seminar are open to the public.
