Second graders in the "I Have a Dream" program at Sanchez Elementary School in Lafayette are excitedly designing animal costumes and masks for this Saturday's "Procession of the Species" program.

"Procession of the Species," an artistic celebration of the natural world, will be on Saturday, April 20, at 10 a.m. at Central Park in Boulder.

The students will show off their creations at the procession. The second graders have been learning about Boulder County's biodiversity -- the variety of all living things and their interactions - in recent weeks.Ìý

Working with Mike Romero, a middle school science teacher, the students have discovered that Boulder County is rich in species diversity, according to Karen Hyde Edgerly, special projects coordinator for CU's Science Discovery program. In the process they have made masks and costumes of bison, coyotes and prairie dogs.

The I Have A Dream Foundation, sponsor of the Sanchez program, is a non-profit organization that provides after-school tutoring, mentoring and support through high school to lower income students. It also provides college scholarships.Ìý

The after-school classes are funded by the Scientific and Cultural Facilities District, a metro Denver special district that supports art, cultural and scientific institutions, and the CU-Boulder Outreach Committee, the University of Colorado's extension of knowledge resources to communities and K-12 audiences.
