University of Colorado at Boulder School of Law Professor Robert Dieter has been nominated by President Bush to be a member of the Board of Directors of the Legal Services Corporation.
Professor Dieter is one of five appointees the President named to serve on the 11-member board. The appointment, which requires Senate confirmation, is for a three-year term. The President announced the nominations March 26.
"I am honored to have this opportunity," said Dieter. "I will work to ensure that legal services clients continue to receive high-quality legal assistance and access to the justice system as mandated by Congress."
The Legal Services Corporation was established by Congress in 1974 to provide legal help in civil matters to low-income individuals. The corporation has an annual budget of $330 million and oversees federal grants to legal aid providers nationwide, such as Colorado Legal Services. For the second consecutive year, President Bush is supporting the corporation's full funding request in his budget.
Professor Dieter joined the law school in 1979 and has been a clinical Professor of Law at CU-Boulder since 1990. From 1983 to 1994 he was the director of the Legal Aid and Defender Program at CU. From 1973 to 1975 he was a Deputy District Attorney for the 7th Judicial District in Delta, Colo. Professor Dieter earned his undergraduate degree from Yale University and his law degree from the University of Denver.
