Yuki Ojika, a junior dance major in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Colorado at Boulder, has been invited to perform a solo of her own choreography at the National American College Dance Festival to be held May 13-15 at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C.
Ojika's dance is the sixth to be invited to the prestigious biennial festival from CU-Boulder since 1981.
"This is the collegiate dance equivalent of the Buffs being invited to the Orange Bowl," said Nancy McElroy, program assistant at CU-Boulder's department of theatre and dance.
At the regional American College Dance Festival held Feb. 27 to March 2 in Ann Arbor, Mich., Ojika was selected from among nearly 600 other dancers for the National American College Dance Festival for her performance and choreography of "Underneath the Silence." Ojika also was nominated for Best Student Performer in a competition sponsored by Dance magazine.
The American College Dance Festival Association was established in the 1970s to promote the development of college dance, primarily through regional festivals, which offer workshops, lecture-demonstrations, classes and both informal performances and a gala concert of works selected by judges. Nine regional festivals are held each spring throughout the country and a national festival is held every other year.
