The origin of light will be explained through a number of experiments, including some explosive chemical reactions, during the Saturday, March 23, CU Wizards show "The Chemistry of Light."
Kathy Rowlen, a chemistry and biochemistry professor at the University of Colorado at Boulder, will present the show at 9:30 a.m. in Cristol Chemistry and Biochemistry, room 140.
The free hour-long show is intended primarily for students in grades five through nine. CU Wizards is an annual series presented on the last Saturday morning of each month during the school year and covers topics in astronomy, chemistry and physics.
During the show, Rowlen will demonstrate how light is created by a wide range of processes, including chemical reactions. Since combustion is a chemical reaction, the show will feature plenty of fireworks, she said. Student volunteers will get to assist the wizard in some of the demonstrations including handling light sticks and preparing chemical reactions.
Free parking for the March 23 show is available in lot 169 northeast of Folsom Stadium off Folsom Street, lot 396 off Stadium Drive, lot 378 southeast of Folsom Stadium, lot 436 east of the Engineering Center and lot 308 south of Regent Drive and west of Kittredge Loop Road.
