Nationally renowned journalists, scientists, policymakers and scholars will gather at the University of Colorado at Boulder March 11 for a public discussion about how the media cover science.
"Science & the Media: A Round-Table Discussion" will be held in the Old Main Chapel from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. The panel will address coverage of critical issues like global warming, as well as the scope of scientific coverage in mass media. The event is free and open to the public, who will have the opportunity to participate in discussions.
Colleen Conant, publisher of the Boulder Daily Camera, Glen Gerberg, former chief meteorologist for KWGN-TV in Denver and Tom Siegfried, science editor of the Dallas Morning News, will participate.
Susan Avery, director of the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences, will be on the panel along with fellow CIRES scientist Roger Pielke. CIRES is a joint institute of CU-Boulder and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
The panel also includes Jerry Mahlman of the National Center for Atmospheric Research. The event is funded by the National Science Foundation.
Media scholars Sharon Dunwoody, Kris Wilson and Tom Yulsman will offer an academic perspective. Yulsman is an associate professor in CU-Boulder's Center for Environmental Journalism.Ìý
Dunwoody and Wilson are faculty members in science journalism at the universities of Wisconsin and Texas, respectively.
The event is presented by the Carbon, Climate and Society Initiative and CU-Boulder's Center for Environmental Journalism.
