"Environmental Ethics" is the topic of the 2002 Morris Colloquium to be held March 15-16 at the University of Colorado at Boulder.
Presented by the CU-Boulder philosophy department, the colloquium will feature lectures by some of the most prominent figures in environmental ethics. All events are free and open to the public.
Professor Tom Regan of North Carolina State University will deliver the keynote address "Work, Hypocrisy and Integrity" on Friday, March 15, at 6 p.m. in Eaton Humanities Building room 1B50. Regan is an internationally known advocate of animal rights.
The colloquium will continue on Saturday, March 16, with all lectures being held in Hale Science room 270, beginning at 9 a.m. with Eric Katz of the New Jersey Institute of Technology, who will speak about "Genocide and Ecocide: Reflections on Environmentalism and Nazism."Ìý
Other speakers on Saturday include Carolyn Merchant of the University of California at Berkeley, who will speak about "Partnership Ethics: Humanity and the Environment;" Peter Wenz of the University of Illinois at Springfield, who will talk about "Environmental Synergism;" and James Sterba of the University of Notre Dame, who will present a talk on "What Ecology Can't Do: The Importance of Ethics to Environmental Policy."
The philosophy department established the Morris Colloquium in 1977 when the professor retired from CU-Boulder.
Professor Morris joined the CU-Boulder philosophy faculty in 1947 where he taught until 1977. He is remembered as much for his committed involvement in the social issues of his community as for his scholarly work. In 1975 he was honored by the American Civil Liberties Union of Colorado for his efforts on behalf of academic freedom and his work to improve conditions at the Boulder County Jail.
The colloquium is co-sponsored by the Morris Fund, the philosophy department and the Environmental Studies Program.
