The University of Colorado at Boulder initiated 87 students from the College of Arts and Sciences into the Phi Beta Kappa honorary organization in December.

Phi Beta Kappa generally taps the top 6 percent of graduates receiving degrees in the liberal arts each semester. Members must maintain a minimum grade-point average of 3.65 and have completed 100 credit hours of course work.

CU-Boulder's Phi Beta Kappa Society, formally known as the Alpha Chapter, was chartered in 1904 as the first Phi Beta Kappa chapter in Colorado. There are only three other chapters in Colorado at the University of Denver, Colorado State University and Colorado College.

The Phi Beta Kappa Society was founded in 1776 at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Va., and has 262 chapters nationwide that annually initiate 15,000 of the graduating elite.
