Applications for freshman admission to the University of Colorado at Boulder for fall 2002 are running 15 percent above the same point last year, following two years of record increases.

Almost 13,000 applications have been received to date, and the final total is expected to reach about 20,000.

Less than one month remains before the Feb. 15 deadline. In considering applications for admission, full and equal consideration is given to completed applications with all required credentials that are postmarked by Feb. 15.

Ron Stump, vice chancellor for student affairs, said that CU-Boulder will place all new fall freshmen, except those living at home, in campus housing.

Applications from Colorado residents have increased 24 percent over last year. Those from outside Colorado are also higher than last year by 11 percent. Barb Schneider, executive director of enrollment management, said that the increases are not due to higher numbers of high school graduates.

"The number of high school graduates in 2001 was only slightly larger than in 2000, both within and outside Colorado," she said.

Schneider said the large increase in freshman applications from Colorado residents represents a "vote of confidence in CU-Boulder." She attributes the increase to several factors: CU-Boulder's growing academic reputation, greater interest in staying close to home since Sept. 11, families' worries about the recession, efforts to encourage students to apply earlier in the year and faster processing of applications.

More than 4,000 freshman applications have been received through the Web rather than on paper this year, further speeding processing.

Â鶹ÒùÔº who are admitted must submit a $200 enrollment deposit by May 1 to hold a place in the class. Classes start Monday, Aug. 26. Final freshman numbers will be released about Sept. 17, after fall census.

Though new housing will not be available for this freshman class, increased residence hall space will be available when the first phase of the Williams Village expansion opens in fall 2003.
