Alisha Madeira, a tourism management student at the CU-Boulder Leeds School of Business, was selected as one of 10 national recipients -- and one of four undergraduates -- of the Travel Industry Association (TIA) Foundation scholarship.
The scholarship, awarded to the top students in the country, supports individuals pursuing careers in the tourism field.
Upon graduation in May 2002, Madeira will pursue a career in the hotel industry. Her long-term goal is to open a bed-and-breakfast in Florida.
The TIA Foundation was created for the purpose of benefiting the U.S. travel and tourism industry. It supports activities vital to the concerns of the entire industry.
Applicants, nominated by a professor in the field of travel and tourism, must write an essay titled "What Aspect of the Travel Industry Interests You and Why."
CU-Boulder Professor Charles Goeldner, who nominated Madeira said, "She is our very best student. This is an outstanding honor for Alisha and brings great acclaim to our program."
Madeira is the second CU-Boulder business student to win the award. In 1999, Nicole Cavarra from Coal Creek, Colo., won the scholarship.
Madeira is from Denver and is a member of the Delta Gamma sorority and the Order of Omega Honor fraternity at the University of Colorado at Boulder.
