University of Colorado at Boulder Provost Phil DiStefano has appointed a search committee to seek candidates for the position of dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.

Todd Gleeson, associate vice chancellor for faculty affairs, is currently serving as interim dean. Gleeson replaced Peter Spear, who resigned in July to accept the position of provost at the University of Wisconsin, Madison.

The search committee is chaired by Rodney L. Taylor, interim dean of the Graduate School, and is composed of university and community representatives. A national search, including both internal and external candidates, will commence immediately. Review of nominations and applications will continue until the position is filled, although applicants are encouraged to have their information on file by Dec. 31. The committee's goal is to hire a new dean for the college effective July 1, 2002.

The search committee is looking for a dean that has academic credentials with a sterling reputation from a first-rate institution, proven administrative capabilities, strong support of the faculty, interpersonal and consensus-building skills, intellectual leadership skills, commitment to excellence in teaching, research and service, a commitment to diversity and fund-raising capabilities.

Members of the search committee are: Anthony Barker, associate professor, physics department; Christopher Braider, associate professor, departments of French and comparative literature and humanities; Jane Butcher, community member; Barbara Buttenfield, professor, geography department; Lisa Chambers, assistant to the dean; Cathy Comstock, co-director, Farrand Residential Academic Program; Aaron Ibur, legislator, Arts and Sciences Student Government; Alphonse Keasley, director, Minority Arts and Sciences Program; Marjorie McIntosh, distinguished professor, history department; Norman Pace, professor, department of molecular, cellular and developmental biology; Jerry Rudy, professor, psychology department; and Jennifer Thacher, president, United Government of Graduate Â鶹ÒùÔº.

Garnett Tatum, director of the Office of Equal Opportunity, will serve as an ex-officio member. Robbie Cave will provide staff support and Bernadette Langbein will serve as staff liaison.

The College of Arts and Sciences is the liberal arts college at CU-Boulder and the largest academic unit on the campus. The college is composed of 31 departments, 33 centers and programs, 590 tenured or tenure-track faculty, 226 staff and 15,000 students.
