More than 4,000 parents and families of CU-Boulder students are expected to attend the annual Fall Parents Weekend a month earlier than usual, Sept. 21-23, due to this year's football schedule.
The event draws parents from around the United States and from several foreign countries. Parents and families can register to attend over the Internet, which accounted for approximately half of all registrations last year, according to Peter Simons, director of parent relations.
The weekend begins on Friday, Sept. 21, and continues until Sunday morning. Registration will be held at the Recreation Center from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Friday and again from 8:30 a.m. until game time on Saturday.
Parents and families will be given the opportunity to enjoy a wide variety of events, including a golf tournament at the Flatirons Golf Course, a welcome luncheon with Chancellor Richard Byyny, faculty and staff, a dance concert by CU dance graduate students and two programs at Fiske Planetarium, "Searching for Distant Worlds" and "Laser Beatles."
Tours are scheduled for the National Center for Atmospheric Research, CU-Boulder's Integrated Teaching and Learning Laboratory, the Dal Ward Athletic Center and the CU Heritage Center. The Office of Admissions also will conduct campus walking tours. Parents are free to tour the CU Museum of Natural History and the CU Art Galleries during regular hours.
Presentations on Friday and Saturday include "Finding Off-Campus Housing," "Study Abroad," "Career Development and You" and "Body and Soul: Architectural Style at the University of Colorado." The CU Fall Career Fair also will be held on Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Coors Events Center.
For those interested in a sport-filled weekend, conditioning classes will be offered at the Recreation Center and the CU Buffaloes will play the University of Kansas at Folsom Stadium.
According to Simons, the annual Parents Weekend is a mutually beneficial event for both students and parents. It gives parents the opportunity to see how well their sons or daughters have adjusted to campus life and also allows students to spend time with their parents and introduce them to their new community and surroundings.
