The Upward Bound program, now in its 21st year of operation at the University of Colorado at Boulder, is experiencing its highest attendance ever this year with two summer programs that began June 15th and end July 27th.

Hailing from nine states, including California, Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Colorado, Arizona, Washington, Oregon and North Carolina, 131 students are taking part in the original summer Upward Bound program and the more recently established Math and Science Center, now in its third year.

Both Upward Bound and Upward Bound Math and Science Center are six-week college preparatory summer programs for high school students from targeted native American communities offering the opportunity to experience a college atmosphere before graduating. The center gives participants an additional focus on math and science.

The programs kicked off last month with residential adviser training. Coordinator Eric Tippeconnic said, "We are extremely proud to have seven former student participants return to work as residential advisers." Three former students who just completed their freshman year at Dartmouth are residential advisers in addition to students from New Mexico State, University of Arizona, University of New Mexico and Ft. Lewis College.

Upward Bound students began their summer with a weekend of orientation that included academic testing, teambuilding and leadership training. They also will make trips to a Colorado Rockies game, Six Flags Elitch Gardens, Water World, Denver Zoo, Imax theater, Central City Opera, Colorado Shakespeare Festival and the Upward Bound College Fair. Competing in the Upward Bound Olympics with Colorado State University and the University of Northern Colorado Upward Bound programs also is part of the program.

The six-week summer academic institute will conclude with a banquet held at the Glen Miller Ballroom on July 27th .
