Twenty-one undergraduate students in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Colorado at Boulder have received the prestigious Jacob Van Ek Award for outstanding academic achievement and contributions to the university and Boulder communities.

The award includes a $400 prize. The recipients were honored May 10 along with faculty members they named as mentors.

The award was established in 1973 to honor Jacob Van Ek, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at CU-Boulder from 1929 to 1959. Van Ek died in 1994 at the age of 97.

Following is a list of the 10 Jacob Van Ek Award recipients from 2001 who wanted their names released, their major fields of study and faculty mentors:

COLORADO

Boulder: Kate E. H. Murray, sociology, mentor Patricia Adler of sociology.

Denver: Jennie Rebecca Puzio, communication, mentor Stan Jones of communication.

Piya Sorcar, journalism, economics and business administration, mentor Ann Carlos of economics.

Fort Collins: Patrick Palmer Kneeland, molecular, cellular, and developmental biology, mentor David Prescott of molecular, cellular, and developmental biology.

Littleton: Cindy Chang, international affairs and Chinese, mentor Madeline Spring of East Asian languages and civilizations.

Michael Jack Stanley, environmental, population and organismic biology, and humanities, mentor Jill Heydt-Stevenson of English.

Loveland: Matthew J. Mahlberg, intellectual and social history and pre-medical studies, mentor Marjorie McIntosh of history.

Windsor: Castara Tegan Stroman, speech, language and hearing sciences, mentor Sheila Goetz of speech, language and hearing sciences.

OHIO

Wapakoneta: Meghann Elizabeth Ormond, Middle Eastern studies, mentor James Jankowski of history.

TENNESSEE

Nashville: Catherine Courtney Workman, anthropology and English, mentor Bert Covert of Anthropology.
