Advertising majors in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Colorado at Boulder took home more top prizes than any other university at the New York One Club's recent One Show Festival, which honors outstanding advertising created by agencies from around the world.

At the awards ceremony held at New York City's Lincoln Center, students from CU-Boulder won a bronze medal in the student advertising competition and also received the Patrick Kelly Scholarship. CU's was the only undergraduate advertising program to win a medal.

This is the second year in a row that CU-Boulder students have earned laurels at the One Show competition. According to One Club officials, the university is establishing an outstanding reputation in collegiate competitions, ranking alongside schools with prominent advertising programs.

Brett Robbs, head of CU-Boulder's undergraduate advertising sequence, noted that the success in the competition "says a great deal about the abilities of both our students and the adjunct professors who teach the advanced creative courses. Area professionals have given generously of their time and talent.

"Our program would not have achieved national recognition without the guidance and commitment of professionals such as Jonathan Schoenberg, Norm Shearer, Eric Liebhauser and Michael Smilanic, who teach our advanced creative classes," said Robbs.

Brandon Sides, a senior from Colorado Springs majoring in advertising and fine arts, was the recipient of the fifth annual Patrick Kelly Scholarship. The scholarship, which carries a $2,000 cash prize, was established by the international advertising agency, Messner Vetere Berger McNamee Schmetterer Euro RSCG, honoring Patrick Kelly, the award-winning copywriter and commercial director who died in 1994.

"Not only did this young man have a terrific portfolio, but his essay showed a true understanding of the human side of advertising. As the honored recipient of the Patrick Kelly Scholarship Award, everyone at the One Club wishes him the best of luck in his future and his career," said Mary Warlick, executive director, the One Club for Art and Copy.

Sides, who is preparing to be an advertising art director, was selected from more than 30 graduate and undergraduate finalists from universities around the world. The decision by a committee from the Messner Vetere advertising agency was based on a consideration of Sides' ads, his essay on why he wants to pursue advertising and recommendations from his professors.

A team of CU students, Reuben Hower, copywriter, Chris Jacobs, art director and Jose Trujillo, designer, won a bronze medal in the annual student advertising competition. Only three medalists were selected from more than 500 applications from both graduate and undergraduate advertising programs. Entrants were asked to create an advertising campaign to promote attendance at track and field events. The CU students' campaign used images of the Fox Theatre marquee, a swimming pool and a road to demonstrate the record-setting distances covered by the athletes.

There also were 28 finalists in the student competition. A CU-Boulder team consisting of Jason Hoff, copywriter, and Allison Gill, art director, was among the finalists. The campaigns of the three medalists and 28 finalists will be published in the 23rd One Show Awards annual, which showcases hundreds of top ads and commercials from the world's leading advertising agencies. The same panel of award-winning copywriters and art directors who judged the professional work also judged the student entries.

CU-Boulder's School of Journalism and Mass Communication provides degree programs for students interested in journalism careers.
