The Office of Diversity and Equity at the University of Colorado at Boulder awarded seven faculty, staff and students the 2001 Equity and Excellence Award last week at the 16th Annual Equity and Excellence Awards Banquet and Graduation Ceremony.

Two awards of distinction also were presented in the graduate and undergraduate student categories.

Equity and Excellence awards are given to faculty and staff whose work best exemplifies a commitment to promoting the principles of academic excellence, cultural pluralism and diversity in the university community. Â鶹ÒùÔº are selected who demonstrate outstanding service to the university community and within the multiculturally diverse communities on campus, in addition to demonstrating academic excellence. Awardees received a certificate and a $250 award.

The 2001 recipients are:

ß Special Graduate Student award: Alphonse Keasley, director, Minority Arts and Sciences Program, for Outstanding Academic Achievement, Ph.D.

ß Special Undergraduate Student award: Piya Sorcar, for Outstanding Academic Achievement, triple major--journalism, business and economics.

ß Undergraduate student awards: Teresa Estrada, senior and Victor Hernandez, junior.

ß Graduate Student award: Rudy Horne, applied mathematics.

ß Staff award: Susan Smith, Student Academic Services Center.

ß Faculty awards: Mary Churchill, women's studies; Michelene Pesantubbee, religious studies; and Cinthia Salinas, School of Education.

A request for nominations for Equity and Excellence awards is announced each spring. A committee of former recipients reviews the applications and recommends the awardees.
