David Budd, associate professor of geological sciences, and Daniel Connors, assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering, are the recipients of CU-Boulder's Big 12 Faculty Fellowships for spring 2001.

The selections were announced by Ofelia Miramontes, associate vice chancellor of diversity and equity.

Each institution in the Big 12 conference has established six annual faculty fellowships of $2,500. The recipients spend two weeks in residence at another Big 12 institution to do research or creative work, collaborate on curriculum development or other educational projects, consult with colleagues and students, offer lectures or engage in other professional activities.

The grant is awarded to cover the travel and living expenses of the fellow.

"The chief academic officers of the Big 12 believe that our member schools should be more than an athletic conference -- that we should also be connected by academic endeavors," she said. "To this end, the officers and the chairs of the faculty senates of our respective schools agreed to encourage faculty exchanges within the Big 12 by creating these faculty fellowships."

Last semester's fellowships were awarded to Robert Bovard and M. Lee Potts of theatre and dance and Nickolay Gnedin of physics. The spring 2000 fellows were Keith Molenaar of civil engineering, Timothy Morton of English and Richard Rogers of sociology.

The Big 12 Faculty Fellowships were first awarded at CU-Boulder in spring 1997. The Big 12 institutions include Baylor, CU-Boulder, Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, Missouri-Columbia, Nebraska-Lincoln, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas-Austin, Texas A&M and Texas Tech.

A request for proposals for Big 12 Faculty Fellowships is announced each fall and spring semesters. A faculty committee screens the applications and recommends the awardees.
