Nate Liederbach, a second year graduate student in newsgathering at the University of Colorado at Boulder's School of Journalism and Mass Communication, recently won the Atlantic Monthly's prestigious 2000 Student Writing Competition.
Liederbach's entry, "Crown of Wisdom," won first place and a $1,000 prize in the "Non-Fiction: Personal Essay" category.
The story is an essay he wrote for Frank Kaplan's essay writing class, Liederbach said. "It tells of a hunting trip I take with my father, in my home town of Gunnison, Colo., wherein I come face to face with my father's not-so-romantic past that I have been romanticizing. It's mostly humorous and is a coming-of-age story."
The Atlantic Monthly was founded in 1857 as a "journal of literature, politics, science and the arts." Honors include the National Magazine Award for Reporting and the National Magazine Award for General Excellence. For more information, visit their online publication at .
