The College of Engineering and Applied Science at the University of Colorado at Boulder is accepting applications for the 34th annual High School Honors Institute and a new opportunity with the Royal Academy of Engineering's "Headstart" program at the University of Southampton, England.

This year's High School Honors Institute on the CU-Boulder campus will be held July 29 to Aug. 1. The four-day campus residential program introduces engineering to students with an interest in math or science who are entering their junior or senior year in high school. Hands-on sessions for participants will include bridge construction, solar energy projects, aerodynamics experiments and activities covering the principles of space flight, biotechnology, robotics, supercomputers, artificial intelligence and electronic circuitry.

Â鶹ÒùÔº will conduct research in the college's Integrated Teaching and Learning Laboratory, a unique facility outfitted with advanced equipment and designed to provide real-world experience for undergraduates. They also will have an opportunity to meet CU-Boulder students and engineering faculty, learn about career opportunities from engineers in industry and experience campus life in the residence halls.

In a new offering, students entering their senior year of high school may apply to attend a weeklong program at the University of Southampton, an internationally known research university on the southern coast of England offering degrees in engineering as well as other fields. The program, open to only 10 Colorado students in its first year, will be offered June 30 to July 7.

"Â鶹ÒùÔº who are interested in learning about engineering while also experiencing a different culture -- possibly as a precursor to a study abroad program -- may be interested in this new opportunity," said Sherry Snyder, director of student programs in the CU-Boulder College of Engineering and Applied Science.

The application deadline for the Colorado High School Honors Institute is June 30, while students who want to attend the program in England must apply by June 1.
