Planetary Scientist Steven Lee will continue the Fall ChancellorÂ’s Community Lecture series with his presentation of "New Views of Mars: The History and Future of Mars Exploration" at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 11, at The Academy.

The program is free and open to the public and attendees will be able to use 3-D glasses during LeeÂ’s visual presentation. The program will show how telescopic and spacecraft observations have been used to explore the planet Mars.

Professor Lee, a research associate at the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics at the University of Colorado at Boulder, also will discuss the future of Mars exploration. LeeÂ’s primary research interests are in the interaction between the surface and atmosphere of Mars.

He is a member of the research team that has been observing Mars with the Hubble Space Telescope since late 1990. His presentation will give an overview of how earlier telescopic and spacecraft observations have been used to explore Mars.

Lee will discuss the Mars Climate Orbiter and Mars Polar Lander missions that were lost at Mars late last year, and outline NASAÂ’s plans for Mars exploration over the next decade.

All talks in the series will be at 7 p.m. in the Chapel at The Academy building, 970 Aurora Ave. Monthly lectures are free and open to the public.

The program is co-sponsored by The Academy and the CU-Boulder Office of Community Relations on Wednesday evenings once a month from September through December.

The series continues the community program launched in September of 1998 that brings CU-Boulder faculty into the community for talks ranging from arts and humanities to business and the sciences.

Parking is available along the streets that border The Academy: Lincoln, Cascade, Aurora and 10th. For more information, contact the CU-Boulder Office of Community Relations at (303) 492-8384.
