The Center of the American West at the University of Colorado at Boulder will present a panel discussion titled "At a Loss for Words: The Endangerment of Native American Languages," Tuesday, Oct. 3rd, from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the Forum Room at the University Memorial Center.
The panel will discuss concerns linguists have with the loss of language diversity and the implications it will have for individual cultures and all of humanity. Native American languages, which are among the most endangered in the world, will be the main focus of the panel.
The panelists will include Andrew Cowell, assistant professor in the department of French and Italian, Jule Gomez de Garcia, an instructor in the department of linguistics and David S. Rood, professor of linguistics. The panelsits will describe the efforts to preserve the languages of the Wichita, Arapaho, Jicarilla Apache, Plains Apache and Kickapoo Indians.
