Del Brinkman, director of journalism programs at the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, has accepted the position of dean of the University of Colorado at Boulder School of Journalism and Mass Communication.
He will assume the position January 1, 2001 pending approval by the CU Board of Regents on June 29, according to CU-Boulder Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Phil DiStefano.
Brinkman previously held several positions at the University of Kansas in Lawrence, including vice chancellor for academic affairs and dean of the William Allen White School of Journalism and Mass Communication. He received his doctorate in mass communications and political science from Indiana University.
The Knight Foundation is known for making national grants in journalism, higher education and the field of arts and culture. It also supports organizations in 26 communities where the Knight brothers were involved in publishing newspapers, but is wholly separate from and independent of those papers.
"I am confident that Dr. Brinkman聮s leadership will move the school to the next level of excellence in its academic programs, including the enhancements that the new facility will provide," DiStefano said. "We are fortunate that Del Brinkman has decided to return to the academic world."
The School of Journalism, which currently has offices and classrooms in Macky Auditorium and Norlin Library, is scheduled to consolidate its facilities in July at the Armory Building on University Avenue. The new location will provide more graduate student teaching and research space, as well as additional room for increases in faculty numbers.
CU-Boulder's School of Journalism and Mass Communication provides a variety of degree programs for students interested in journalism careers. Undergraduate program offerings include advertising, broadcast news, broadcast production management, news-editorial and media studies.
