Three stellar seniors at Boulder area high schools are heading to the University of Colorado at Boulder thanks to the fundraising efforts of the Boulder Chapter of the Alumni Association, which is awarding each student $2,500 toward his or her tuition.

The students and their families will receive their gifts at the Boulder Scholarship Reception Sunday, April 30, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.

The chapter also is supporting nine former scholarship recipients (who are now upperclassmen at CU) with $200 to put toward books for classes.

In addition, outgoing CU President John C. Buechner will accept the 2000 Community Service Award given by the Boulder alumni in honor of his years of service to the state of Colorado, the city of Boulder and the University of Colorado. Buechner will select his favorite charity to receive the $500 prize.

Professor Dennis Van Gerven of anthropology, who also is director of the honors program at CU, will be the guest speaker.

The event will be held at the University Club, 972 Broadway, and is free and open to the public, although an RSVP by April 24 is requested. Call Leslie Will at (303) 494-4613 or e-mail Ldealsail@aol.com. Parking is available at the Euclid Autopark for $1.25.

The Boulder chapter of the CU Alumni Association has awarded more scholarship money than any other chapter of CU-Boulder alumni in the nation. The Boulder chapter has been distributing scholarships to local students for more than 24 years.
