Five outstanding members of the CU-Boulder campus, including students, faculty and staff, have been selected to receive the spring semester Building Community Recognition Awards.

The awards, sponsored by the Building Community Committee, are given to campus members who show exceptional involvement, commitment and dedication to making the Boulder campus a more welcoming community.

The honorees are:

Sean R. Kelley, associate professor and associate chair, department of theater and dance: Kelley was recognized for his commitment to fostering diversity on campus. His contributions include pursuing the production of plays written and performed by African Americans and other underrepresented groups; teaching that includes diverse perspectives; involvement with other campus units to increase diversity on campus; and personally assisting parents and new faculty members.

Karen Lozano, senior, and Ruchi Malhotra, junior, co-chairs of the CU-Boulder International Women's Alliance: Lozano and Malhotra were acknowledged for their outstanding leadership and commitment to raising awareness of the issues that impact minority women locally and internationally. They were instrumental in organizing the recent 25th Anniversary International Women's Week, and succeeded in bringing together a series of highly visible, eloquent and politically committed women from diverse backgrounds to give public lectures and workshops that were well-attended by members of the university and Denver-Boulder communities.

Ricki Martinez, Family Housing manager: Martinez was recognized for her unique ability to make the diverse Family Housing residential community, made up of different cultures, nationalities, economic backgrounds, lifestyles and sexual, political and religious orientations, feel as a single community.

John A. Moore, Jr., president of the Black Student Alliance and coordinator of the Hallett Diversity Program: Cited as an instrumental leader in the CU-Boulder community, Moore was recognized for the important roles he plays in developing new student service projects with the specific focus of supporting minority students.

The winners were nominated by members of the campus community and were selected by the committee. Previous winners, selected last semester, were Sharon Campbell of Counseling and Psychological Services, Christine Hirsch of the United Government of Graduate Â鶹ÒùÔº and Jan Johnson of Counseling and Psychological Services.

Each award includes an engraved sandstone tribute and an invitation to an upcoming recognition ceremony.

The Building Community Committee is a group of faculty, staff and students who provide assistance to groups seeking to increase diversity, community and civility on the Boulder campus.

Strategies for accomplishing this include co-sponsoring educational and social activities, implementing a policy for responding to hate acts and supporting the growth of a "University 101" course for freshman and transfer students about the attitudes, beliefs and skills needed to be a CU student.
