Gilbert White, distinguished professor emeritus of geography at the University of Colorado at Boulder, will present the ninth Abel Wolman Distinguished Lecture on Nov. 5 at the National Academy of Sciences in Washington, D.C.

White will lecture on "Water Science and Technology: Some Lessons from the 20th Century," in which he will discuss the future integration of environmental policy with water management policy.

White, known as the "father of flood plain management," is internationally prominent for his work on the management of natural resources and on human responses to environmental hazards. He also is a member of the National Academy of Sciences.

The lecture was created by the National Research Council's Water Science and Technology Board in honor of Abel Wolman, one of the giants of water resources research and management. The lecture is sponsored by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the National Science Foundation, the U.S. Department of Energy, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Geological Survey.
