The 69th annual Alumni Awards ceremony will honor 10 people for their service to the University of Colorado and their communities in Old Main Chapel at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 11.
The George Norlin Award, honoring distinguished alumni for lifetime achievement and devotion to the betterment of society, goes to Mary Ann Casey, a 1970 International Relations graduate, former ambassador to Algeria and Tunisia, and CU-Boulder's current diplomat in residence.
Susan K. Avery, director of the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES), and Larry D. Singell, College of Business dean emeritus, wil receive Robert L. Stearns Awards, which recognizes current faculty and staff members for extraordinary achievement and service to the university.
Avery, at the helm of the CIRES programs since 1994, received the Elizabeth Gee Memorial Lectureship Award this year. Under Singell's guidance during the last five years, the business college endowment tripled to $12.6 million, and programs to improve the business college curriculum were put into place.
New Yorker Bill Goldstein, a 1988 business graduate, and Boulderites Graham Hill, a 1986 Journalism graduate, and William Caile, a 1965 engineering graduate, capture this year's Alumni Recognition Awards for their service to CU. Charles Bedford of Denver, a 1992 law graduate, received the Outstanding Recent Graduate Award for extraordinary achievement within 10 years of graduation.
State Sens. Terry Phillips, D-Boulder County, and retired Tilman "Tillie" Bishop, R-Grand Junction, garnered the Legislative Recognition Award and the Legislative Lifetime Achievement Award respectively, for their efforts on behalf of higher education.
Don Estes, a 1958 engineering graduate, is being recognized for his many years of service to CU as past chair of the Alumni Association.
