James R. Gaines, a corporate editor at Time Inc., will deliver the 1998 Ralph L. Crosman Memorial Lecture, titled "A Fine Mess: Journalism in the Age of Monica," on Wednesday, April 22, in the Old Main Chapel at the University of Colorado at Boulder.

The lecture, which is free and open to the public, will be at 5 p.m. A reception will follow in the Heritage Center on the third floor of Old Main.

As TimeÂ’s corporate editor, Gaines is responsible for creating new businesses in TV, new media, education, books and custom publishing, which use TimeÂ’s editorial resources. He is the third-highest ranking editorial executive at Time and has also been the magazineÂ’s managing editor and the managing editor of both Life and People magazines.

The School of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Colorado at Boulder has sponsored the Crosman lecture since 1953. Ralph L. Crosman was the first director of the journalism program. He died in 1948.
