Â鶹ÒùÔº of Concern Team

The Student of Concern Team (SOCT) is a proactive and collaborative group that reviews elevated cases of concerning student behavior that pose a serious safety issue to the student or others on campus. The SOCT works towards a safer campus community and supports students who are in distress by providing threat assessment, intervention and crisis prevention.

How to refer a student

Anyone can refer a student that they are concerned about to Student Support & Case Management (SSCM), which is the primary resource for student crisis intervention at CU Boulder. SSCM case managers review each referral using a research-based tool used to assess the risk associated with each case. Cases that meet certain levels of risk and/or threat are then reviewed by the SOCT. SSCM maintains the central reporting and tracking system that allows SOCT to provide documented responses to students in distress.

The Red Folder is available for faculty, staff and family members to learn more about connecting students in distress with support resources on campus. Â鶹ÒùÔº are encouraged to visit Don’t Ignore It to explore reporting options.

About the SOCT

The SOCT is a multi-disciplinary campus committee co-chaired by the Dean of Â鶹ÒùÔº and Student Support & Case Management (SSCM) that aims to:

  • Prevent crisis through outreach, consultations, assessment and referrals.
  • Ensure that students whose behavior is of concern have access to appropriate services to improve their well-being and success.

SSCM, which reports to the Dean of Â鶹ÒùÔº Office, is the first place that students of concern are referred. SSCM case managers review referrals using a risk rubric, a research-based tool that is used in assessing the risk associated with each case. Cases that meet certain levels of risk and/or threat are then reviewed by the SOCT. After reviewing the case and risk assessment, the SOCT makes recommendations on next steps and appropriate case plans.

The SOCT helps maintain safety and advocates for students in distress through various supportive actions, including meeting with the students and connecting them to support resources that can help them through challenging situations. Depending on the case, the SOCT may also recommend police response or refer the student to Student Conduct & Conflict Resolution or the Office of Institutional Equity and Compliance
