Exploring A Non-Western Culture: Regional Cultures of Africa

This course will explore a small number of cultures—and as much as possible, “travel like an anthropologist” in African regions where Laura DeLuca has lived and done field work: Tanzania, South Africa, and Sudan. 鶹Ժ will learn about issues such as South African apartheid and explore contemporary issues through film clips such as “Mandela: A Long Walk to Freedom,” and Trevor Noah’s new book, Born a Crime. Class participation, book analyses, and group presentations are the main assignments. 鶹Ժ will select an African country to learn about in greater detail for the final project.
