Welcome to the CU department of Spanish and Portuguese! We are a vibrant, multicultural, diverse community of scholars and students deeply engaged in the study of the languages, cultures, societies, literatures and arts of Latin America, the Iberian Peninsula and the growing US Latinx population. Today, more than 500 million people speak Spanish worldwide, and over 230 million speak Portuguese. Spanish has a long tradition in the USA, which along with Mexico, Spain, Colombia, and Argentina is one of the top five Spanish-speaking countries in the world.
