A new center at the University of Colorado Boulder will begin researching space weather between the Earth and the moon to find ways to make the region safer for satellites.
Satellites provide internet connectivity, navigational assets, national security information and all weather forecasting depends on it. However, the region of space where satellites orbit between the Earth and the moon can be hazardous due to space weather.
Right now, Principal Investigator Tom Berger said, scientists have no forecasting ability for that region of space.
“All of these satellites are vulnerable to changes in earth’s atmosphere due to changes in the earth and radiation from the sun,” Berger said.
