During the 2021-2022 school year Public Achievement was highlighted as a key CU Engage program that is supporting local impact through our support and development of youth leaders. The experiences of PA alumni Enihs Medrano and Jaideep Mangat, now both local elected officials, as well as Program Director and Instructor, Soraya Latiff, are highlighted in this article. Our program cultivates and intentional pathway for young people to grow though the program as leaders during their youth and go on to impact their schools and communitites. The article highlights examples of Public Achievment programming and youth led change efforts and clarifies our program's model to create sustainable legacies and social change.

During the 2021-2022 school year a Public Achievement of Centaurus High School students formed around the collective vision to start an Ethnic Studies course at their school. Over the course of the school year students not only brought awareness to what ethnic studies is and why we need it in all schools, but they also collaborated with teachers, admin and district officials to begin the process of creating Boulder Valley School District's (BVSD) first ever Ethnic Studies course. This article highlights student voices on the importance of learning though a lense of culture, race, identity and ethnicity and highlights how this youth led work is situated within a larger national movement for ethnic studies in schools.

During the 2020-2021 school year the Public Achievement program was learning how to adapt our learning, community and organizing work to an online setting. Despite the challenges of the pandemic and a remote school year our program continued to build community and address the most pressing social issues important to young people in an online setting. This article talks more about youth experiences around social issues during the pandemic and how Public Achievement continued to be a space for youth to share their voices and create change during this time.

During the 2019-2020 school year Public Achievement students across three schools (Casey MS, Angevine MS, and Centautus HS) alongside college Public Achievement coaches from CU Boulder worked to understand the most pressing resources needed for students experiencing the lived reality or threat of family separation through deportation. Part of the students work was speaking with the shool board and presenting a letter of requests for more family separation resources in BVSD, student led-research inluding student testimonies, and resources to distribute to teachers and in schools. This was Public Achievment's last in-person gathering, event or action before COVID-19 moved all of our programming virtual. After giving her Ed Talk for the CU Boulder School of Education, Enihs voice on our collective work sparked statewide attention on an issues we know is pervasive in schools and communities accross the nation. Finding Our Collective Power as �鶹��Ժ of Color Who Refuse to Conform

Enihs Medrano, Centaurus High School Senior, Public Achievement Coach

This is a story of the change that young people can enact when they use personal experiences as the drive to make a difference for themselves and others. Enihs Medrano shares her personal journey within CU Boulder’s Public Achievement program at Centaurus High School and how it molded her desire to use her voice for social change. Her story is only one piece of a collective effort by a group of high school students who are working to diversify the AP and IB classes at their high school. “When young people of color refuse to accept the stereotypes placed on us by teachers, administration, white peers and white parents, we are able to access the education we deserve while changing the perception of students of color.” Video taken at the CU Boulder School of Education Fall 2018 Ed Talks at the Dairy Arts Center. Inspired by TED Talks, Ed Talks is a thought-provoking series aimed at challenging assumptions and creating new paradigms around diversity and inclusion in education and beyond.
