Roughly 145 engineering capstone teams are presentingprojects at the 2019 Engineering Projects Expo on Friday, April 26, 2019, many of which are mechanical engineering capstone design projects. This interactive event is open to the public from 2 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. at CU Boulder in the Indoor Practice Facility with an awards ceremony to follow. Teams are sponsored by an array of industry partners who have provided guidance over the course of the academic year.
One sponsor, Quality of Life Plus Program Manager Court Allen said, "We like working with students, because they bring a unique and unbiased view to the problem. I have been impressed by CU Boulder students’ depth of technical understanding and quality of learning at this point in their education.”

Siemens Gamesa partners with CU students to develop drone-based monitoring system for wind turbines
Mechanical engineering, electrical engineering and computer science students designed an infrared imaging system that will allow a user to monitor subsurface features in wind turbine blades, an invention that could make wind turbine repair safer, faster and more cost-efficient.
Taking the hassle out of luggage transportation with a wheelchair
Sponsored by nonprofit program Quality of Life Plus, mechanical engineering capstone design students havedesigned a device that isfully collapsible, fits in a backpack, weighs 18 pounds and doesn’t interfere with the wheelchair’s center of gravity that will allow wheelchair users to more easily transport luggage.
Lift system helps disabled veterans return to the water
Sponsored by nonprofit program Quality of Life Plus, mechanical engineering capstone design students have designed a system to lift disabled swimmers out of the water that weighs only200 pounds, enabling its use on a floating dock in a lake at the Travis Mills Foundation Retreat in Maine.
