McNeill Junior, Deen Qasemi, will be spending the majority of his summer participating in a competitive summer research program. Soon after the semester ends Deen is traveling to Pennsylvania for the GeoPEERS REU- Geosciences Program in Energy and Environmental Resource Sustainability.

Deen learned about this opportunity from his Geochemistry Professor. He researched the program and decided to apply. Deen has worked to develop strong relationships with faculty and staff on campus and leaned on that network of folk when applying to GeoPEERSs. He connected with his coordinator, Julia Willis, who supported his application..

“Julia has always been a huge help and I can go to her to ask questions”, Deen shared.

Deen is looking forward to working with a professional mentor and the ability to develop his own project.

When asked why he decided to apply for this program, Deen shared that he is excited to engage in a professional development opportunity that he can add to his resume. He is also looking forward to networking with other students and faculty members from different institutions.

Also, Deen shared that his motivation was tied to his belief system as well as his desire for professional and academic growth.

He said, “I’m Muslim and Islam encourages us to do good in the world and take care of each other and community.” He shared that the program at Penn State will teach him how to work on water filtration systems which will provide folks with access to clean drinking water.
