As CU Boulder welcomed the class of 2026 to campus, CU Linguistics undergraduate students helped introduce first-year students to the field of linguistics at the聽College of Arts and Sciences Welcome Fair. Held August 19 on Sewell Field during CU Welcome Week, the A&S聽Welcome Fair provided聽an opportunity for several thousand聽first-year students聽to explore the聽50 majors, 25 minors and 10 certificate programs聽offered by the聽College of Arts and Sciences. Five Linguistics聽students, Creola Djarlo, Paul Bontempo, Emily Reynolds, Leily Nguyen, and Anna Hoisington, assisted director of undergraduate studies聽Professor Kira Hall by fielding inquiries and providing聽program information to potential majors and minors.聽The Linguistics table attracted a steady stream of students, who聽came to learn about the field, get information about the new Linguistics major tracks, pick up Linguistics swag and sample Buffalo sugar cookies. The聽Department could not ask for better ambassadors to the discipline and its many applications and subfields. Department chair Laura Michaelis observes, "Linguistics is not a field of study taught in high school. So CU students arrive not knowing anything about it. That's why it's so important for our wonderful majors and minors to spread the word: language is fascinating and the study of language gives us a window into聽technology, cognition,聽society and culture".聽
