The Hummingbird Effect
Jay's research on sexual mimicry in hummingbirds was highlighted in a documentary from PBS Nature, "The Hummingbird Effect"! You can watch the clip , and be sure to check out the rest of the hour-long special which covers lots of recent work on hummingbirds. As an NSF Postdoctoral Fellow in the Taylor Lab Jay is studying the genetic underpinnings of the sexual dimorphism that is discussed in this clip!. The white-necked jacobin hummingbird is polymorphic - some, but not all, females are similar to males in their plumage coloration. We will be taking advantage of this fascinating sexual diversity to understand how sexes can evolve trait differences and similarities at the genetic level.
