A perspective article from Erik and Scott was recently published in The Auk: Ornithological Advances and highlighted as the Editor's Choice from the issue. The paper reviews some recent studies that reveal genetic associations with avian plumage color. This work highlights the role of gene regulation over gene product in producing patch specific color variation, and discusses some of the recent findings related to carotenoid-based coloration.
