J-1 Exchange Visitors: Engaging in J-1 Related Activity Outside of CU Boulder Requires Prior Approval

Reminder for J-1 Exchange Visitors

Your J-1 exchange visitor status allows you to perform your J-1 exchange visitor program activities, objectives, and goals at CU Boulder as outlined in the initial DS-2019 request paperwork submitted by your sponsoring CU Boulder department.

Exchange visitors in the Research Scholar, Professor, and Short-Term Scholar categories may be authorized to participate in occasional lectures and short-term consultations that are incidental to the exchange visitor’s primary program activities. The authorization must be obtained from ISSS in writing prior to engaging in the activity. You must be authorized for Incidental Employment to receive an honorarium, compensation, or reimbursement of expenses related to the occasional lecture, consultation, or other collaborative activity from an entity other than CU Boulder prior to the activity.

Please carefully review the ISSS website regarding Incidental Employment, which includes information on how to obtain authorization for incidental employment.

Please reach out to your ISSS J-1 Advisor if you have any questions.
