Kuhn's current research is on rivers and streams within the National Park System, with a focus on how water temperatures are changing in response to warming temperatures and shifting hydrologic conditions. He is interested in multidisciplinary river research that incorporates methods from hydrology, geomorphology, aquatic ecology, biogeochemistry and ecological engineering.

His undergraduate degree is a B.S. in Geology & Geophysics from Yale University, and between college and graduate school he studied bald eagles in Boulder County, worked as an interpreter at Kings Canyon National Park, and studied pond ecology and biogeochemistry at Cape Cod National Seashore.
