Anecdotal Evidence, August 22: Philly cheesesteak, campaign-style

For one reason or the other, presidential candidates just can't get their cheesesteak order right.

In our Anecdotal Evidence column, movers and shakers share personal stories of how intriguing (and often odd) presidential campaigning in their respective swing state can be.

“The one thing that is the Achilles Heel of every presidential campaign that has ever come to Pennsylvania is that they will invariably go to get a cheesesteak. And whenever they do it, they screw it up. It is unbelievable.

“You can Google ‘cheesesteak flub’ (we did, ‘s what we found). John Kerry came in, and he got Swiss cheese on his. What were you thinking?

“You have to get onions, and you have to get Whiz. Don’t say, ‘Oh, I like provolone,’ or ‘I like Swiss.’ Don’t get clever.

“That’s a presidential lesson – to say, ‘Whiz with…,’ which is Whiz with onions. Say that, and you’ll be fine.”
