Statement on Bias in Policing
We acknowledge that members of our community, including students, staff, faculty, and visitors, have been targeted, detained, had guns pointed at them, and suffered similar experiences at the hands of the police, particularly those from marginalized and underrepresented groups. We further acknowledge that these experiences are deeply traumatizing and unjust. We apologize, on behalf of the society in which we live, for having allowed systemic oppression in law enforcement to perpetuate injustice on our watch.
We commit to offering a safe place of compassionate understanding. Namely, because we recognize there is little accountability for police transgressions, we are currently developing a strategy for proactive advocacy on behalf of victims of such transgressions.
