On July 14, 2020, Colorado enacted the Healthy Families and Workplaces Act (HFWA). Beginning Jan. 1, the act requires employers to provide paid sick leave to their employees up to a maximum of 48 hours per year. Administrative Policy Statement outlines or references all university employee leave-related policies.
Employee Groups Eligible for Sick Leave Beginning Jan. 1
- Under the HFWA and , the following employee groups become eligible for sick leave on Jan. 1.
- An employee who has more than one active appointment type listed below will have one shared balance across all appointments, and will record sick leave using the processes detailed in the employment group for each appointment.
Student employees, temporary classified staff, university staff and temporary researchers
- Accrue at a rate of 0.034 sick hours for each hour worked. Accrual hours are calculated as part of the payroll process, and become available once payroll has processed the pay period.
- If the department uses MyLeave, “Hourly Sick Leave” will be an option beginning Jan. 10 under appropriate circumstances after it is accrued.
- If the department uses third-party systems (Kronos, FAMIS, etc.), individuals will need to connect with their HR liaison for guidance and training.
9-month faculty
- Are provided 44 hours of sick leave at the beginning of each fall and spring semester, usable immediately.
- Summer appointments do not accrue sick leave (ex: teaching, research) but accrued sick leave may be used during those appointments.
- 9-month faculty not working full-time are provided a proration of sick hours, based on FTE, at the beginning of each fall, spring, and summer semesters.
- Process for usage and tracking remains unchanged. Any use should be processed through the relevant Dean’s Office.
Other contract employees (including temporary faculty, and students on contract)
- Full-time employees paid on a contract and not covered by the 12-month Faculty or 9-month policy are provided 24 hours of sick leave at the beginning of each fall, spring, and summer semesters, usable immediately.
- Hours will be loaded on the first day of the following month of the semester. For example, Spring 2021 hours will be loaded February 1st into HCM.
- Contract employees not working full-time are provided a proration of sick hours, based on FTE, at the beginning of each fall, spring, and summer semesters.
