Exploring Exoplanets

To date, more than 5,000 planets have been discovered around other stars! Explore some of these distant worlds and strange worlds with us, how they compare to our own solar system planets, and the ways in which we search for them. We can even use Minecraft to simulate hypothetical worlds and exoplanets!

3rd-5th

Film (15Ìýminutes):ÌýWorlds of Curiosity

Live TalkÌý(45Ìýminutes):ÌýTopics include the night sky tonight, introduction to exoplanets around distant stars, and exploration of various exoplanets and comparison to solar system planets

Themed Activity Add-OnsÌý(30 minutes each, max 25 students each):ÌýÌýÌý

  • Beyond Human Vision - Explore the world of light and how it applies to exoplanets through demonstrations comparing the vision of humans, other animals, and telescopes.
  • Exoplanets in MinecraftÌý(max 20Ìýstudents each)Ìý- Â鶹ÒùÔº will use Minecraft to explore virtual exoplanet worlds and the ways in which different real-world conditions change exoplanet surfaces.
  • Kinesthetic AstronomyÌý- Through a series of simple body movements, students will gain insight into the relationship between time and motions of Earth, as well as seasons on other planets.
  • Scale Model Solar System - Â鶹ÒùÔº will explore the vast distances in space by creating a pocket solar system and going on a guided tour of our outdoor scale model solar system (weather permitting).Ìý

The sun is a star that appears larger and brighter than other stars because it is closer. Stars range greatly in their distance from Earth.

6th-8th

Film (15Ìýminutes):ÌýWorlds of Curiosity

Live TalkÌý(45Ìýminutes):ÌýTopics include the night sky tonight, exoplanet detection methods, and exoplanet atmospheres and surfaces

The solar system consists of the sun and a collection of objects, including planets, their moons, and asteroids that are held in orbit around the sun by its gravitational pull on them.

9th-12th

Photoelectric materials emit electrons when they absorb light of a high-enough frequency. Atoms of each element emit and absorb characteristic frequencies of light. These characteristics allow identification of the presence of an element, even in microscopic quantities.
