I am Professor of Linguistics here in Boulder, where I have been teaching since 1984. I am originally from Hawai'i, and I attended the University of Hawai'i, Mānoa for three years before transferring to UCLA. In a course in my second term in the Linguistics Department at UCLA I met Sandra Thompson, a pioneer in the field of discourse and grammar. Sandy changed my understanding of language and linguistics, and through her guidance I became involved in the study of discourse and grammar, especially from a typological perspective. Later I discovered the work of Emanuel Schegloff and with his help started to explore the relationships between Linguistics and Conversation Analysis. This new field of Interaction and Grammar, or Interactional Linguistics, continues to be my intellectual home.
