CU Boulder wins $20M to lead National Quantum Nanofab facility /facility/cosinc/2024/06/21/cu-boulder-wins-20m-lead-national-quantum-nanofab-facility CU Boulder wins $20M to lead National Quantum Nanofab facility Anonymous (not verified) Fri, 06/21/2024 - 10:47 Categories: News Tags: News Researchers at CU Boulder will soon begin work on what they’re calling the “quantum machine shop” of the 21st century. The U.S. National Science Foundation today announced a $20 million grant to CU Boulder to launch a facility known as the National Quantum Nanofab (NQN). In this facility, Colorado researchers and quantum specialists from around the country will be able to design and build incredibly small devices that tap into the world of atoms and photons—the tiny packets of energy that make up light. Principal Investigator Scott Diddams, professor in the Department of Electrical, Computer and Energy Engineering, alongside a team of physicists and engineers, will lead the realization of this maker space. Diddams said it will help transform discoveries from the quantum world into technologies and devices that can have greater impact on society, and shore up a rapidly growing sector of Colorado’s economy. window.location.href = `/today/2024/06/20/cu-boulder-wins-20m-lead-national-quantum-nanofab-facility`;

Highlights of the 1st COSINC Hands-on Workshop /facility/cosinc/2022/04/21/highlights-1st-cosinc-hands-workshop Highlights of the 1st COSINC Hands-on Workshop Anonymous (not verified) Tue, 05/03/2022 - 13:20 Categories: News

The two-day limited participation hands-on workshop in the area of material 3D nanofabrication and characterization was highly appreciated by our 13 participants from diverse academic and technical backgrounds. They were mostly graduate students from the CU system, local universities, and a couple of industrial professionals from the local companies. Based on the feedback received, overall, participants enjoyed the opportunity to learn about the COSINC facilities and tours of various CU Boulder’s research facilities. However, the clear winner was the cleanroom facility, where they had to gown in and carry out various experiential learning tasks, in particular, on the 3D nano printer, where they fabricated a three-dimensional structure of the Buff logo on a very small scale, as small as 10 times the size of the human hair. The lectures describing the theory behind various material fabrication and characterization techniques on the first day, were also great opportunities for them to engage and ask questions relevant to their projects. This workshop was one of the first series of hands-on training offered by COSINC and based on the reviews and demand, there will be several workshops on other material fabrication and characterization topics offered throughout the year. The workshops are enabling the workforce of the future by providing critical hands-on multidisciplinary skills and education that are applicable in a range of scientific and technical areas, from semiconductors, photonics, quantum science, energy, to environment and bio- and nano-medicine.

COSINC Webinar: Low Energy Ion Scattering Spectroscopy /facility/cosinc/2022/05/03/cosinc-webinar-low-energy-ion-scattering-spectroscopy COSINC Webinar: Low Energy Ion Scattering Spectroscopy Anonymous (not verified) Tue, 05/03/2022 - 09:05 Categories: News

“Low Energy Ion Scattering Spectroscopy (LEIS) can provide the elemental composition of the outermost atomic layer of a material by probing it with a 1 – 10 keV beam of noble gas ions. There isn’t another way to get this kind of information about the outermost layer of atoms in a material. Studying this layer plays a critical role in understanding a material’s catalytic, wetting, adhesion, frictional properties, etc. To our knowledge, the LEIS system, IONTOF's Qtac100, is the second Qtac in the USA. It is equipped with special sample preparation chambers. Furthermore, without breaking vacuum, sample can be transferred from and to the Kratos SUPRA XPS (X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy) system, which is a complementary surface analysis technique.

Our presenter is Dr. Philipp Bruner, Senior Research Scientist at IONTOF GmbH. Philip has been a research scientist at IONTOF for over 10 years now in the R &D section, working on ToF-SIMS and LEIS instrumentation”

Registration can be completed onlineEmail Jugessur with any questions.
