Committed to reclaiming forgotten history, What’sHerName tells the stories of fascinating women you’ve never heard of (but should have). Through compelling interviews with guest historians, writers, and scholars, Katie and Olivia bring to life the “lost” women of history, with over 100,000 downloads this year, and to listeners in over 100 countries.

Intern will work with our curriculum director creating materials to help teachers integrate the podcast into their curriculum at the college, high school, and middle school level.

Dzanc Books is an independent nonprofit press dedicated to publishing innovative and award-winning literary fiction, advancing great writing, and expanding our literary community by offering low-cost mentorships for as aspiring writers and supporting writers-in-the-schools initiatives. Founded in 2006, Dzanc's authors have been recognized by the Chautauqua Prize, the Shirley Jackson Awards, National Book Critics Circle Award, Lambda Literary Awards, the Man Booker Prize, and the National Endowment for the Arts, among many others.

The Dzanc Books editorial internship is a twelve-week program designed to introduce students to the fundamentals of publishing. Over the course of the cycle, interns participate in evaluating submissions, take part in conference calls with the Dzanc editor-in-chief, who provides information about the publishing process and industry, and optionally take on additional special projects, including e-book proofreading, copy editing for upcoming titles, and online research. The internship will occasionally include guest lectures by current and former authors working with the press, or by prospective authors on the topic of submitting work to a publisher or literary agent. The group meets once weekly over Skype to discuss the lecture material, check in on projects, and receive new assignments. Interns are expected to commit between 10-15 hours of work per week to completing their assignments, which is done on their own time.

Tasks are assigned based on individual interest, but can include:

- Reading and evaluating submissions for the house

- Proofreading ebooks

- Copy editing and proofreading for forthcoming books

- Online research related to publicity and marketing leads

- Publicity outreach, such as interviewing independent bookstores

Prospective interns should be great readers, preferably with experience and interest in reading literary (as opposed to commercial) fiction, and should be comfortable with in-depth analysis of written works. All internships are conducted remotely and are unpaid.

Position

Two internships available for 3 credit hours each

Overview

Interns at Colorado Arts & Sciences Magazine will be asked to perform many of the tasks needed to write, edit, plan and publish the magazine in digital and print form. The internship will be managed such that the interns learn and practice writing for a general audience and using the technical skills in desktop publishing.

The tasks involved will include the following, under the direction of the editor:

Completing story assignments on topics ranging from natural-sciences research to scholarly work in the arts and humanities. These writing assignments will generally include steps including the following:
• Scheduling and completing interviews of the subjects of stories.
• Preparing as much as possible for the interview, meaning striving beforehand to understand as much of the topic of discussion as possible and forming questions that could be asked of the interviewee.
Writing stories based on the primary research, interviews and scholarly publications, if applicable.
Learning and applying basic rules of style and usage used in writing for non- scholarly, external audiences. Such rules include general adherence to the Associated Press Style book.
Learning and practicing general practices of general-publication writing, which include:
• Writing “lead” sentences and opening paragraphs that frame each story such that readers are easily able to understand.
• Crafting stories in such a way that readers understand both the concepts being discussed and the writer’s intent as the story progresses from beginning to end.
Suggesting and coordinating photographs or other graphic elements to help illustrate each story.
Suggesting story ideas based on reviews of mass-media publications quoting CU- Boulder faculty, students or alumni and based on reviews of peer-reviewed publications co-authored by CU-Boulder faculty.
(Possibly) sharing news stories about A&S faculty and students on the college’s social media channels.
Other duties as assigned.

Compensation will be $15/hour.

The Colorado Arts & Sciences Magazine is published by the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Colorado Boulder. The magazine promotes the news and achievements of the students, faculty and staff of the College of Arts and Sciences, the intellectual core of the university, where research, scholarship, creative work and education are conducted across more than 60 fields.

The Colorado Encyclopedia (CE) intern will assist staff with research and editing. The intern will be supervised by the Editor-in-Chief and will work closely with the Encyclopedia’s Associate Editor, Education Editor, and Technology Advisory Board. Proofing leveled articles for grammar and CE style
Researching and acquiring appropriate media for CE articles
Other related work

The position requires skills in communication, research, word processing, spreadsheet, and task management. Hours are flexible and most work can be done remotely. Compensated internships are competitive. Placements will be made based upon the following criteria: GPA, interview performance, writing sample, and workplace fit.

The Colorado Encyclopedia began in 2009 when Colorado Humanities convened a group of Colorado enthusiasts to talk about developing a reliable compendium of information on life in Colorado. From these conversations a state encyclopedia began to take shape. Through the contributions of many collaborators, it has grown to fruition.

Overview

Lighthouse internships provide students with career experience in arts nonprofit organizations. We offer focused educational experiences that will translate to real-world job skills and will help interns make informed professional decisions. Lighthouse internships support our Young Writers, Communications, Community Engagement, Events, Adult Programs, and Development teams. Work is a mix of organizational needs and the intern’s interests and career goals.

Lighthouse interns will get an inside look at the functioning of a busy arts nonprofit and may, if availability permits, get an opportunity to sit in on workshops, events, and classes. While some writing is a component of the internship, and exposure to a vibrant writing community is certainly a perk, please note that the goal of this internship is not to develop the student’s personal creative work.

Projects may include:

Assistance in Young Writers Program Workshops;
Customer service;
Basic graphic design and material distribution;
Event coordination;
Assistance with social media, email campaigns, and institutional marketing;
Writing blogs and conducting written interviews, helping with podcast production;
Website updates on Drupal;
Various administrative assistance including but not limited to filing, data entry, tallying evaluations, and digitizing files;
Each intern will work with their supervisor to develop a long-term internship project, which can follow the interns career interest and Lighthouse’s needs. This project should be something that contributes to the organization and something that the intern can use in a future professional portfolio.

Qualifications

Lighthouse is looking for interns who are passionate about the literary arts and seeking experience in the nonprofit world. Candidates should be self-motivated, willing to ask for help and direction when needed, communicative, and able to answer questions for a diverse group of people. A sense of curiosity is a must; interns should be quick learners and excited writers.

Lighthouse requires interns to be present during our weekly staff meeting, Tuesday’s at 11:00 AM.
