This course explores American literature as a site of cultural intersection between European settlers and indigenous peoples.ÌýÌýÌýWe will read early American texts in conversation with films portraying those encounters, bringing a critical and historical lens to both.ÌýÌýFor example, we will read Jacques Cartier withÌýHochelaga: Land of SoulsÌý(2017), the JesuitÌýRelationsÌý·É¾±³Ù³óÌýBlack RobeÌý(1991) Guaman Pomo de Ayala, Hernan Cortés, and Mayan codices withÌý´¡±è´Ç³¦²¹±ô²â±è³Ù´ÇÌý(2006).ÌýÌýThe course requires standard English reading and writing requirements while teaching film analysis as well.
