COEN 2880- Fresh Start

About

Fresh Start (COEN 2880) is a 1 credit hour, free elective class offered to students in the College of Engineering & Applied Science. This course is best for students who have academic goals they must accomplish by the end of the semester in which they take Fresh Start. Fresh Start is a semester long focused academic coaching experience, teaching life and academic skills, focusing on goal attainment, and providing a supportive community to all students in the course. Fresh Start is a research-based national best practice used by colleges and universities nationwide.Ìý

What to Expect

COEN 2880 meets once a week, for 75 minutes. This class is graded, and students are expected to complete all assignments and attend all classes. The great thing about COEN 2880 is the work you do in this course is directly related to creating success in all of your other courses and accomplishing your academic and personal goals. You can expect to try new strategies related to learning/studying, priority management, balancing school and work, building resiliency, and getting through the semester without going into 'survival mode'! You can also expect to reflect on your progress, engage in dialogue with other students and guests, and celebrate your accomplishments.Ìý

Your success in this course is directly related to your willingness to remain focused on your success, and continuously put effort in toÌýattaining your goals. This course is based on other successful classes, where students who did well in the course subsequently raised their GPA on average by a full point, and achieved many academic and personal goals. Each week you can expect to spend one hour or more outside of class, on topics related to COEN 2880.ÌýHowever, the amount of time you spend on these topics really depends on what your goals are and what you need to do to achieve them.Ìý

Who Is A Best Fit

Â鶹ÒùÔº who need to achieve specific academic goals at the end of the semester are the best fit for this course. Some of these goals can be:

  • Raising your GPA
  • Passing a class you are repeating
  • Truly learning the concepts taught in your classes
  • Managing your time and priorities (both academic and personal) for balanceÌý
  • Staying away from survival modeÌý
  • Getting out of Academic Warning or Alert
  • Returning from Scholastic Suspension and having a successful semester upon returning

How to Register

Only a small group of students will be eligible to take COEN 2880. If you received a letter inviting you to register for this course, you should be able to search for COEN 2880 in the class search in MyCUInfo, and register, as long as the course is not full.Ìý

Is COEN 2880 Required?

COEN 2880 is not required, but highly recommended if your goals are similar to those listed above and you received an invitation.
