U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar, a 2020 presidential candidate, will close the University of Colorado Boulder’s Conference on World Affairs. The Molly Ivins Memorial Plenary, a mainstay of the CWA, has been subtitled “A Conversation with Senator Amy Klobuchar” and will take place on Saturday, April 13, at 4 p.m. in Macky Auditorium on the CU Boulder campus.

The talk will be a moderated discussion with Tom Zeiler, professor of history and director of the program in international affairs at the University of Colorado Boulder. Their discussion will cover a wide range of pressing issues facing communities like Boulder across the country. Sen. Klobuchar will also receive questions from the audience. Audience members wishing to submit a question should download the free CWA app prior to the event.

Amy Klobuchar is the senior U.S. Senator from Minnesota - the first woman elected to the United States Senate in Minnesota’s history. Prior to her time in the U.S. Senate, Klobuchar served as the Hennepin County Attorney. Since she arrived in the Senate, Senator Klobuchar has built a reputation for putting partisanship and politics aside in favor of strengthening our economy and helping middle-class families. A recent Vanderbilt University study ranked Senator Klobuchar as the most effective Democratic senator in the last Congress. She is running for the Democratic nomination for president of the United States in the 2020 election. Klobuchar is a graduate of Yale University and the University of Chicago Law School.

Ticket Update:

The event is free and open to the public but is ticketed. Tickets are no longer available for this event. Any unclaimed seats will be made available to waiting patrons at the event.

The Glenn Miller center ballroom in the University Memorial Center will serve as an overflow venue featuring a closed circuit feed of the event.

Throughout its history the CU Boulder Division of Continuing Education has utilized innovative technologies to extend educational opportunities to students beyond the CU Boulder campus. For a second year in a row, those efforts include providing the resources needed to livestream sessions of the Conference on World Affairs (CWA) to a worldwide audience.

Last year's CWA livestream service reached over 50 countries and served as the educational component of watch parties on the CU Denver campus and at other local schools in the Boulder/Denver region.

This year's CWA week (April 9-13) will livestream 63 of the nearly 200 sessions open to the public, without charge via the CWA Livestream page that will later be made available online via the CWA YouTube archive page.

The Division of Continuing Education will cover the significant production and staffing costs of livestreaming the CWA this year to audiences in Boulder and beyond. Livestreaming services are provided by Loclyz Media Services in conjunction with the CU Boulder College of Media, Communication and Information.

"Continuing Education's sponsorship of livestream capabilities at the Conference on World Affairs fits beautifully with our mission of making CU Boulder’s faculty, courses, programs, and research available to a larger audience," said Ted Rockwell, Director of Marketing and Communications, Division of Continuing Education.

The Ebert Interruptus series is one of the most beloved Conference on World Affairs traditions. It's a four-part event showcasing a film along with in-depth analysis with the host. Film critic and author Josh Larsen will host the 2019 series bringing this year's feature: WALL-E, the Oscar-winning, animated Pixar film.

We asked Josh some questions about this year's event:

We're excited to welcome you back to Boulder! What made you say yes to your third year at CWA?

Well, my first year, in 2017, was very much a trial by fire, having not attended Interruptus in the past. I learned a lot from that and brought those lessons to my second year, where we streamlined the experience and brought in other CWA speakers as guest participants. We'll continue to tweak things as we see fit, but I was mostly excited to come back this year because I finally feel like I know what I'm doing.

Can you give any insight into your selection of WALL-E as this year's film?

We've developed a bit of a pattern of selecting titles that don't exactly fit the traditional Interruptus agenda, which had largely been devoted to "canon" films, or commonly accepted classics. Rushmore, 2016's selection, was not only more recent but also a purer comedy, while Mad Max: Fury Road, last year's choice, was an entry in a genre that's rarely given classic consideration: action. But a good film is a good film, and the format that Roger Ebert established for Interruptus is - unsurprisingly - generous and flexible enough to work with all sorts of cinema. And that's why this year we're headed in another unconventional direction: animation.

We believe this is the first animated film to be dissected at CWA Interruptus. What makes WALL-E unique among other animated pictures?

WALL-E's extended opening sequence is essentially a silent film, without dialogue of any kind. And so more than many animated efforts, it places great importance on aesthetic elements such as production design, editing, music, character design, and more. These are exactly the sort of details we dig into throughout Interruptus - in addition to considering things like theme and story - so I'm confident WALL-E will stand up to the scrutiny, while also being a ton of fun to watch with a crowd.

A diverse group of more than 100 speakers representing 19 countries are coming to the University of Colorado Boulder campus April 9-13, 2019 for the 71st Conference on World Affairs.

Notable speakers include Mike Reiss, a longtime writer of “The Simpsons,” soccer star Hope Solo and Miriam Jordan, national immigration correspondent for The New York Times. The 2019 CWA will share a range of perspectives on today’s most pressing issues along with discussions on this year's core conference themes: “Design for Life: Breaking the Bubble,” “Disruptive Technology,” and “Women & Girls Changing the World.”

Of the 19 countries represented, speakers will travel to this year's conference from Belarus, Denmark, Georgia, Lebanon, Portugal, The Netherlands, Slovenia, Sweden and the United Kingdom.

The weeklong conference featuring panel discussions, performances, and plenaries is open to the public, without charge. In an effort to be more accessible to our campus and community audiences, the CWA will host a new Tuesday through Saturday schedule April 9-13, 2019.

First-time CWA attendees include:

Mike Reiss, Emmy award-winning writer & producer, "The Simpsons", (recently renewed through its 32nd season) and one of the first members of the original writing staff
Hope Solo, World Cup and Olympic soccer champion and human rights activist, currently fighting for equal pay and increased diversity in US soccer

Joshua David, co-founder of the High Line, (New York City's park in the sky) among the most innovative urban reclamation projects to date
