Far from "doing no harm," it treats some patients unfairly, leading to detrimental effects. Guided by diverse patient testimonies and case studies, Microaggressions in Medicine focuses on the harms that such patients face. It amplifies their voices, stories, and experiences, which have too-often been excluded from mainstream bioethical, medical, and popular discussions. Microaggressions in medicine are not rare, but frequent in the healthcare experiences of marginalized patients. Recognizing this can help patients better understand and make sense of their experiences. As bioethicists Lauren Freeman and Heather Stewart argue, building such an awareness can also help current and future healthcare professionals recognize the serious and enduring consequences that microaggressions have on their patients. Freeman and Stewart offer practical strategies for healthcare professionals to reduce microaggressions in their practices.</p></div> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div>The first and only book-length treatment on microaggressions in medical contexts. </div> <h2> <div class="paragraph paragraph--type--ucb-related-articles-block paragraph--view-mode--default"> <div>Off</div> </div> </h2> <div>Traditional</div> <div>0</div> <div>On</div> <div>White</div> Mon, 08 Apr 2024 04:58:44 +0000 Anonymous 12299 at /coloradan Press Freedom and the (Crooked) Path Toward Democracy: Lessons from Journalists in East Africa /coloradan/2024/04/05/press-freedom-and-crooked-path-toward-democracy-lessons-journalists-east-africa <span>Press Freedom and the (Crooked) Path Toward Democracy: Lessons from Journalists in East Africa</span> <span><span>Anonymous (not verified)</span></span> <span><time datetime="2024-04-05T17:44:56-06:00" title="Friday, April 5, 2024 - 17:44">Fri, 04/05/2024 - 17:44</time> </span> <div> <div class="imageMediaStyle focal_image_wide"> <img loading="lazy" src="/coloradan/sites/default/files/styles/focal_image_wide/public/article-thumbnail/press_freedom_book.jpeg?h=4fa67171&amp;itok=jDPAd_Sr" width="1200" height="600" alt="the cover depicts a man riding a motorcycle"> </div> </div> <div role="contentinfo" class="container ucb-article-categories" itemprop="about"> <span class="visually-hidden">Categories:</span> <div class="ucb-article-category-icon" aria-hidden="true"> <i class="fa-solid fa-folder-open"></i> </div> <a href="/coloradan/taxonomy/term/162"> Books by Alums </a> </div> <div class="ucb-article-content ucb-striped-content"> <div class="container"> <div class="paragraph paragraph--type--article-content paragraph--view-mode--default"> <div class="ucb-article-content-media ucb-article-content-media-above"> <div> <div class="paragraph paragraph--type--media paragraph--view-mode--default"> <div> <div class="imageMediaStyle large_image_style"> <img loading="lazy" src="/coloradan/sites/default/files/styles/large_image_style/public/article-image/press_freedom_book.jpeg?itok=qJ6jxEuf" width="1500" height="2266" alt="the cover depicts a man riding a motorcycle"> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="ucb-article-text d-flex align-items-center" itemprop="articleBody"> <div><p><strong>Meghan Sobel Cohen</strong> (Jour'05) and Karen McIntyre Hopkinson<br> (Oxford University Press, 174 pages; 2023)<br> <a class="ucb-link-button ucb-link-button-blue ucb-link-button-default ucb-link-button-regular" href="https://global.oup.com/academic/product/press-freedom-and-the-crooked-path-toward-democracy-9780197634202?cc=us⟨=en&amp;#" rel="nofollow"> <span class="ucb-link-button-contents"> Buy the Book </span> </a> </p> <p>Media scholars generally suggest that as people gain access to mass media content, they increasingly support democracy and reject authoritarian rule. Much of the scholarship classifying global media systems has overlooked the world's most developing nations, and among those that have included developing nations, there exists a misguided premise that nations develop in a linear fashion: from non-democracy to democracy, and from a restricted press to a free press. This book shows that much of what scholarship depicts about media systems of developing nations is wrong. In reality, the ebb-and-flow of political change, democratization and backsliding calls for more historically informed views of media systems that do not fit into the confines of existing theories.<br> <br> Using the perceptions of journalists in Rwanda, Uganda, and Kenya to examine mediascapes at varying stages of development and democracy-building, this book examines the advancement of media and press freedom at varying stages of national development. Drawing on qualitative fieldwork and a cross-national survey, this book provides an updated state of press freedom in these three countries and shows how a nation's political and cultural intricacies complicate traditional media development frameworks and notions of press freedom. A detailed set of considerations are put forth for understanding media systems outside the Western world; specifically, that each country's distance from conflict, political benchmarks, international linkages, and civil society strength are central to understanding its degree of press freedom, development and democratization.</p></div> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div>This book shows that much of what scholarship depicts about media systems of developing nations is wrong.
